Are frequent loose stools a sign of IBS?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 42-year-old male, and I have been having loose stools twice a day for the past week. I took Loperamide medication, and it was reduced, but now I feel constipated. The same thing happened one month back, too. Will these symptoms keep recurring? Is my gut health poor? Or is this IBS? How do I know whether my symptoms indicate IBS? Also, the frequency of loose stools increases if I am stressed or anxious. How to deal with this? Are there ways to prevent its recurrence? I am worried.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It sounds like you are dealing with recurring digestive issues. Your symptoms could indeed indicate something like Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), especially since they seem to be triggered by stress and alternate between diarrhea and constipation. Here is some guidance to help you manage these symptoms, understand their cause, and find ways to reduce recurrence.

Key symptoms may include-

  1. Alternating diarrhea and constipation.

  2. Abdominal pain.

  3. Bloating.

  4. Symptoms that worsen with stress.

There is no specific test for IBS. It is usually diagnosed based on symptoms, especially when symptoms are chronic (persisting for at least three months) and no other cause is found. IBS can only be diagnosed by ruling out other causes like infections or inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).

The symptoms might reoccur during-

  1. Stress connection: Stress and anxiety can trigger gut symptoms, speeding up or slowing down digestion.

  2. Medication cycle: Frequent use of anti-diarrheal medications like Loperamide can lead to a cycle of diarrhea followed by constipation.

  3. Food sensitivities: Certain foods may be triggering your symptoms. Tracking your diet can help identify specific triggers.

Managing gut health can improve the symptoms. These may include-

  1. Balanced fiber: Soluble fiber can help balance stool consistency, while too much insoluble fiber may worsen diarrhea.

  2. Probiotics: Probiotic-rich foods like yogurt support gut health.

Stress management techniques can also help to improve IBS symptoms. These may include-

  1. Relaxation techniques: Meditation, deep breathing, or light exercise can help reduce stress-related gut symptoms.

Long-term prevention can be achieved by:

  1. Regular follow-ups can help rule out other conditions, especially if new symptoms develop (e.g., blood in stools, weight loss).

  2. Managing stress, watching your diet, and maintaining a balance in fiber can significantly help control symptoms. This approach may reduce recurrence and improve overall gut health.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
