Can topical steroids and synthetic retinoid creams help reduce inflammation and encourage ingrown hair growth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Is there anything I can do to prevent ingrown hairs in the groin area and on my legs? I have a significant number of black spots on my legs from trying to relieve the pain by squeezing them, and now I am left with scarred legs. Is there a cream I can use to lighten these scars, or what can be done? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have reviewed your query and concerns. Based on your description, it appears you may be dealing with ingrown hairs. The most common causes of ingrown hairs are shaving, waxing, and tweezing unwanted facial and body hair. These methods can leave the hair's sharp tip too short and close to the skin's surface, making it more likely to grow sideways or curl back into the hair follicle, becoming trapped under the skin and leading to irritation and inflammation of the surrounding skin.

Treatment for ingrown hairs can vary, and sometimes, the ingrown hair will heal on its own without specific treatment. You can try using a topical steroid cream like 0.1 % Mometasone furoate cream once daily for one to two weeks to reduce inflammation. Additionally, you may consider using Tretinoin 0.025 % for local application at night during the same duration to help dislodge keratin and encourage the ingrown hairs to come out. However, it is important to consult with your general practitioner or a nearby dermatologist before using any medication. Please seek a review if your problem persists.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
