How to manage painful ingrown hair in the vaginal lip line?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have ingrown hair in the vaginal lip line. They are red, swollen, and painful when touched. Current medication is Lacto Calamine solution and T-bact.
Kindly suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
A red, swollen, painful bump near the vaginal lip line that has been there for three to four days. It does sound like an ingrown hair with local inflammation, possibly a folliculitis or even a small abscess (boil).
Probable diagnosis: Ingrown hair with localized bacterial infection (folliculitis or early abscess). Common in areas with hair removal (shaving, waxing, tight clothing, and friction).
Treatment plan:
Keep using T-Bact (Mupirocin). Apply a small amount two to three times daily directly on the bump. Continue for at least five to seven days, even if it starts improving.
Warm compresses. Use a clean, warm compress (warm, damp cloth) on the area for 10 to 15 minutes, three times a day. This helps reduce swelling and pain and may help the hair come to the surface or drain any pus naturally.
Avoid squeezing or popping it. Doing so may spread infection or worsen inflammation.
Wear loose clothing and maintain hygiene. Wear cotton underwear and avoid tight pants during healing. Gently clean the area with lukewarm water, avoiding harsh soaps or scrubbing.
For pain management (if needed), you can take Paracetamol 500 mg or Ibuprofen 200 mg for pain and swelling if you are not allergic or sensitive to them.
Regarding follow-up: In a week.
Preventive measures: Avoid these
Shaving or waxing the area.
Tight underwear or synthetic fabrics.
Using multiple creams without guidance.
I hope this helps.
