What causes persistent ingrown hairs in the pubic area?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have multiple ingrown hairs in my pubic area after waxing for a year. I have stopped waxing, shaving, and all hair removal for the last four to five months and have been treating the area with a professional ingrown hair product containing glycolic acid and salicylic acid. Also, I have been exfoliating and moisturizing regularly. I have tried various remedies, including natural products like tea tree oil and apple cider vinegar, as well as Hydrocortisone cream. The ingrown hairs never get infected or painful. They appear as skin-colored bumps or red bumps that I can gently squeeze, and hair comes out easily, often with a piece of skin attached to it. I have never had a problem with ingrown hairs from shaving throughout my life. I do have coarse, dark hair that grows very quickly. I am puzzled as to why I still have ingrown hairs showing up after stopping all hair removal for four to five months. What else could this be, and what can I do?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

The most common cause of ingrown hairs is shaving, waxing, and tweezing unwanted facial and body hair. Removing hair leaves the tip short and close to the skin, making it prone to grow sideways or curl back into the follicle, leading to irritation and inflammation. Treatment for ingrown hairs can vary, and sometimes, they heal spontaneously without specific treatment.

I suggest you use a topical steroid cream like 0.1% Mometasone cream once daily to reduce inflammation. Also, Retino-A 0.025% (Tretinoin) can be used for local application at night to dislodge keratin and help ingrown hairs come out. It is necessary to consult your doctor and take the medication with consent. Review after two weeks for further management.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
