Is continuous light bleeding for a month after IUD insertion normal?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 26-year-old female. I weigh about 139 pounds and am 60 inches tall. I currently take Sertraline as my only medication. I had an IUD (Mirena) inserted three months back. I experienced one menstrual period without issues, but then had another very quickly after the first. I have been lightly bleeding for almost one month now without stopping. I am also experiencing some very light cramping occasionally.

I want to know if this is normal and if there is anything I can do to stop the bleeding. Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I read your query and understand your concern.

Regarding your symptoms, I believe you have developed a side effect from the inserted IUD (intra-uterine device). However, you do not need to worry, as the bleeding may be an indicator to determine if you are pregnant. If the bleeding stops, it may indicate pregnancy or contraceptive failure. However, I suggest you take one tablet of Norethisterone 5 mg orally once daily for two weeks to control the bleeding. Consult your specialist doctor, talk to them, and then take the medication as per their advice.

If your symptoms persist, please schedule another appointment for follow-up via chat, phone, or video consultation.

Thank you.
