Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
As a 32-year-old expectant mother living in an area heavily affected by microplastics and plastic pollution, I am worried about the potential effects on my pregnancy, especially regarding my placenta's health. Can exposure to these pollutants impact my placenta's health and affect my baby's development? Are there specific risks or adverse effects associated with placental exposure to microplastics and plastic pollution? Additionally, what measures can I take during pregnancy to minimize my exposure to these pollutants and safeguard the health of my placenta and my baby?
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
The effect of microplastics has not been studied extensively in pregnancy. However, what is known is that microplastics can cause some degree of intrauterine growth restrictions (IUGR) by affecting the placenta. This is however, dependent on the number of microplastics in you and other underlying risk factors like hypertension, smoking, and diabetes in pregnancy, which are known causes of placenta IUGR.
Since the control of microplastics is majorly dependent on government policies, we concentrate more on preventing the known cause of placenta IUGR in order not to worsen the effect of microplastics on the placenta and the growth of the baby.
For you, you can take your water for microscopic examination to determine the quantity of microplastics in it and reduce the intake of plastic packaged food.
Additionally, part of antenatal care involves checking the developing baby's growth. Any discrepancy between the age and the growth of the baby can be detected early, and measures can be instituted to either reverse or reduce the effect of the cause. So, you and your baby should be fine with proper antenatal care.
I hope this information helps.
Please revert in case of further queries.
Thank you.
