What causes dark bleeding soon after a period ends?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello, doctor,

I just finished my period, but I got it again this morning, and it has been only two weeks. The bleeding is normal, but the colour of the blood is darker than usual.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Thanks for your health consultation. Based on your description, I would suggest:

If it happened for the first time, just think what medications or contraceptives you have recently started or stopped. The brown or darker blood is usually old, accumulated blood. So, get a high vaginal swab to exclude any pelvic infection.

Also, I suggest you to get:

1. A beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) test done to exclude pregnancy.

2. A cervical smear to rule out cervical pathology.

3. One outpatient hysteroscopic exam to exclude any local pathology.

I also suggest you get a complete blood count, thyroid function test, and transvaginal scan. Check for any changes in your routine life, illness, stress, anxiety, workload, or any other symptoms as well.

To reduce bleeding, you take the tablet Ponstan (Mefenamic acid) 500 mg (milligrams) at intervals of eight hours.

Check the cycle's regularity in the coming months. If it remains disturbed without any pathology or with all normal results of the above-mentioned tests, then you can have combined oral contraceptive pills for three months to regulate it. Have a healthy diet, go for daily walks, engage in recreational activities, and quit recreational drugs.

Take iron supplements to prevent the risk of anemia. If you have any other health issues, seek treatment. Collect all the results of the above-suggested laboratory tests and investigations and discuss them with your local gynecologist.

I hope this helps you.

Best of luck.

Thank you.
