How can one regulate the menstrual cycle after an illness?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My menstrual cycle has been irregular this month. I had my period last month, then again after 20 days, and now I am experiencing bleeding once more. This is unusual for me, as my cycle is typically regular. Additionally, I had a fever and cold for one week, which lasted for about a week before I recovered. I am concerned about these irregular periods and whether my recent illness may have contributed to this change. Could there be an underlying issue causing this?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Your menstrual cycle has become irregular, with periods occurring only 19 to 20 days apart, which is a noticeable change for you. This could be due to various factors, including your recent illness and fever in mid-January, which may have temporarily disrupted your hormones. Stress, nutritional deficiencies, or dehydration during your recovery could have also played a role. Additionally, hormonal fluctuations, thyroid imbalances, or conditions like PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) might contribute to cycle irregularities, especially if accompanied by symptoms like acne, weight changes, or unusual hair growth. Some viral infections can also cause temporary menstrual disturbances, which typically resolve on their own.

To manage this, track your cycle, noting the flow, duration, and any unusual symptoms like fatigue or mood swings. Maintaining a balanced diet with iron-rich foods and staying hydrated can help prevent deficiencies caused by frequent periods. If this pattern persists for another cycle, consider consulting a gynecologist for further evaluation. Hormonal tests or an ultrasound may help identify any underlying causes and guide appropriate management.

I hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any other concerns.

Thank you.
