What could be the reason for menstrual irregularities?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am an 18-year-old female experiencing irregular periods recently. My cycle used to be consistently 28 days, but now it varies between 21 and 35 days. Is this normal for someone my age? I have also noticed heavier flow and more intense cramps than usual. Could these changes be related to stress or changes in my diet? I am wondering if it is safe to exercise during my period or if I should avoid certain activities. I have heard conflicting information about whether exercise can help with menstrual symptoms or make them worse. Are there specific exercises you would recommend during different phases of my menstrual cycle? Also, I am concerned about how these irregularities might affect my fertility.

Kindly assist.

Hello,

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I can understand your concern.

There are quite several things that can affect the duration of the menstrual cycle, such as stress, diet, weight gain, weight loss, medications, and some underlying medical illnesses. However, a menstrual cycle within the range of 21 to 35 days is still considered normal. It is when it extends beyond these extremes that it is seen as abnormal.

Therefore, try to control your stress and reduce your intake of high-calorie diets, focusing more on vegetables and fruits. Healthy exercise is also beneficial, and you can exercise even during your period if it is comfortable for you, as there are no medical contraindications. There are no specific types of exercises for specific phases of the cycle, but generally, aerobic exercise is advised and has a positive impact on the menstrual cycle.

Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further.

Thank you.
