What could cause irregular periods and a brownish discharge after sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My period started on the 10th day of this month. My date is usually the 16th. I had a very unusual period this month where it was lighter than usual, and it was mostly just brown or dark brown blood. I tried having sex for the first time a few days prior to my period, and my boyfriend had a condom on, but the penis did not really go in because it was too painful for me. I tried having sex for the second time the day after my period was over. This time, it went in a little bit, but we stopped because it hurt for me. Now, ten days after my period ended, I noticed a brown discharge in my underwear.

Is this something to worry about?

Please confirm for me.

Thank you.
