Is IUD an effective choice for long-term birth control?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 29-year-old woman considering an IUD for birth control, and I have a few questions and concerns. I have not had children yet, so I am a bit nervous about whether the insertion might be painful or if it could affect my ability to get pregnant in the future. I have been reading about both hormonal and copper IUDs, but I am not sure how to determine which option would be best for me.

I am also curious about potential side effects such as weight gain, mood changes, or acne, and how IUDs might impact my menstrual cycle. Do they typically make periods heavier or lighter?

Overall, I would like to understand if an IUD is a safe and effective choice for someone my age who is looking for long-term birth control.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concerns and would be happy to help you choose the best birth control option. If you are considering contraception for more than three years, I would recommend the Mirena IUD.

For long-term family planning, you have two main options: the copper IUD and the hormonal IUD. While copper IUDs are effective, they can sometimes cause complications like spontaneous expulsion, misplacement, heavier or painful menstrual bleeding, and they do not offer protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Particularly, IUD on the other hand, is a hormonal intrauterine device that releases levonorgestrel directly into the uterus. It is effective for up to eight years for contraception and up to 5 years for managing heavy menstrual bleeding. Initially, some users may experience side effects such as abdominal discomfort, bloating, acne, weight gain, and irregular bleeding during the first three to six months. However, after this period, these symptoms often improve, and many.

It works by thickening cervical mucus, preventing fertilization and ovulation, and thinning the uterine lining, which helps reduce bleeding. Other hormonal IUDs have similar mechanisms but differ slightly in hormone dosage and duration of use.

Contraindications for few IUD include pregnancy, pelvic infections, certain cancers, and cervical or endometrial abnormalities.

If you prefer alternatives, oral contraceptive pills are also effective, working by similar hormonal mechanisms without interfering with sexual activity.

Compared to condoms, which must be used consistently and have a higher failure rate (35 to 40 %), it offers a highly effective, low-maintenance option with less than 1 % failure rate.

Based on your needs and concerns, I would recommend IUD as a safe and reliable long-term birth control method. Please consult your healthcare provider to discuss this option in detail and determine the best course of action for you.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert if there are any queries.

Thank you.
