Can IUD displacement cause pain in the abdomen?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had the Paragard copper intrauterine device (IUD) for about three years now. Two days ago, while I was asleep in bed, my dog jumped onto my lower abdomen. Since then, I have been experiencing constant dull pain in what I believe is my uterus. I also feel bloated in that area, and at times, the pain becomes sharp. The sharp pains come and go, and I also experience them in the same area during orgasm or sexual intercourse. I am unsure whether I need to see a doctor or go to the emergency room (ER) for this. I would greatly appreciate any advice on what I should do.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I am very sorry about your medical condition, and I appreciate that you are paying attention to changes in your body. However, do not worry I am here to help. Based on your symptoms, I believe you may have developed a uterine malposition, which could be compressing surrounding structures like blood vessels and the intestines, leading to bloating and sharp pain in your lower abdomen. Given the impact of the dog’s jump, this may be a significant concern.

I recommend getting a pelvic ultrasound and sharing the results with me. In the meantime, you can take Celecoxib (Celebrex) 200 mg, two tablets twice daily for two weeks, and visit a physical therapist for a massage. If you have any further concerns or questions, feel free to schedule a direct appointment or follow-up.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
