HomeAnswersUrologykidney stonesI recently underwent a CT scan, which shows evidence of stones. Is this the reason for my excruciating pain?

Will my excruciating pain be caused by a kidney stone or something else?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I recently underwent a CT (computed tomography) scan, and here are some of the results: 'Kidneys and ureters: Punctate stone is seen in the upper pole of the left kidney. 2 mm stone in the lower pole of the left kidney.' No explanation was given for the pain, and I am still experiencing it. I had kidney stones 13 years back. The current medication details include Wellbutrin and Tylenol or Advil. Is this only a matter of time before I have excruciating pain again?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq, and thank you for choosing us as your provider for health care.

Have gone through all your details and appreciate your concern.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I cannot seem to access the full CT (computed tomography) scan report. Please try and upload the full thing. For now, I will base my opinion on what you have shared: These stones are too small to require any surgical treatment. These small stones are also unlikely to cause you severe or excruciating pain. A more likely explanation for your pain is that you had a bigger stone that was passing down and causing the pain, and by the time you had your scan, it had already passed out. It is very common for stone formers to experience repeated stone formation. The saying goes - once a stone former, always a stone former. To provide you with some preventive strategies to help reduce recurrent stone formation, please provide me with a few details:

  1. Are you diabetic or hypertensive?
  2. Have you had any surgeries in the past?
  3. How were your previous stones treated?
  4. How many times have you formed stones in the past?
  5. Do you have any trouble passing urine?
  6. Have you ever had blood in your urine?

Please revert back with the details, and I will do my best to assist you.

Thank you.
