Why is there a hole in the incision area after laparoscopic cholecystectomy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I underwent a laparoscopic cholecystectomy two weeks back and the incision in my belly button appears to have a small hole in it and the glue has gone off from it. Should I be worried? Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Following a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, it is not uncommon for the incisions to go through a healing process. While it is difficult to assess your specific situation without a medical examination, a small hole and the loss of glue in the belly button incision may not necessarily be a cause for immediate concern. However, it is important to monitor the incision site for any signs of infection or complications. If you notice any of the following symptoms, it would be advisable to contact your surgeon or healthcare provider for further evaluation:

  1. Increasing redness, warmth, or swelling around the incision.
  2. Persistent or increasing pain at the site.
  3. Drainage of pus or fluid from the incision.
  4. Foul odor coming from the incision.
  5. Fever or chills.

Your surgeon or healthcare provider is the best person to assess your situation and provide appropriate advice based on your specific circumstances. They might want to examine the incision and determine if any additional treatment or follow-up care is needed. In the meantime, it is generally recommended to keep the incision clean and dry. Avoid picking or manipulating the area, as this may disrupt the healing process. Following your surgeon's post-operative instructions regarding wound care and any restrictions on activities will also be beneficial for your recovery.

I wish you good health.

Thank you.
