What causes swollen and painful feet?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I suffer from a mildly swollen foot that becomes painful after sitting for extended periods. The pain is mild, and the foot becomes swollen after working out or standing on the ankle joint.

  1. What should I do?
  2. What might be the probable cause for it?

Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The numbness you are feeling can be caused by the swelling. There are numerous potential causes of swelling in the feet, ankles, or both. Among the more widespread reasons are vein diseases, such as varicose veins, or a history of blood clots in the leg or legs. The valves that are meant to prevent blood from pooling in the feet or ankles do not function as effectively in people with varicose veins or people who have had a past clot. As a result, blood pools. Wearing compression stockings or elevating the feet periodically throughout the day would be beneficial.

It can be a medication side effect, such as Amlodipine, one of your medications, which may result in ankle or foot swelling, and you might talk to your doctor about this. Other reasons may include diseases of the liver, kidneys, or heart. You can do blood tests, liver and kidney function tests, but evaluating the heart would require an echo or additional testing. It is essential to consult your doctor about these symptoms or signs so that he or she can examine you and ascertain what is most likely to be the cause.

Please feel free to ask any more questions.

I hope this was helpful.

Thank you.
