What are the reasons for a short period with mild bleeding in a 21-year-old female?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 21-year-old female, and my height is 5 feet and 4 inches. My weight is 167 pounds. My period usually lasts for four days. But recently, in the last two to three months, the duration of my period was just three days. This month, I had my period three days before the expected date, and I hardly experienced any bleeding. I barely had to use a napkin. There was mild bleeding when I just washed the area. I did not face such an issue previously. Why is this so? Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

We will pay close attention to your worries and address all your questions with utmost care and concern.

A menstrual cycle of 21-35 days and experiencing bleeding for two to seven days is considered normal. Normally, a fluctuation in the menstrual cycle up to a week may occur. But, since you said that you experienced very scanty bleeding this time, I doubt the possibility of a pathology behind this. So, I suggest you do a USG (ultrasonography) pelvis scan, thyroid profile test, and CBC (complete blood count) to rule out any pathology. So accordingly, we can start with the treatment if required.

I hope this information helps you. Please feel free to ask if you have any further queries.

Thank you.
