What is a mammogram, and how does it help in breast cancer?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 45-year-old female, and I have just found out that I have breast cancer. I am really upset because I am a single mom with a 15-year-old child to take care of. My doctor wants me to have a mammogram to check for breast cancer more clearly, but I do not know what that is. Can you please tell me what a mammogram is? Why do I need it? Is it safe?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query.

I can understand your concern. It is difficult to diagnose breast cancer without a biopsy, so a biopsy is mandatory. A mammogram is a type of low-dose x-ray. It is a safe procedure; there is nothing to worry about. There may be a little discomfort for a few minutes while they take the mammogram. Having a mammogram is uncomfortable for most women. Some women find it painful. A mammogram takes only a few moments, though, and the discomfort is over soon. What you feel depends on the skill of the technologist, the size of your breasts, and how much they need to be pressed. It is recommended to screen for breast cancer after 40 years of age. It is safe and can detect early-stage breast cancer.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
