Hello doctor,

My period started last week, but I am still experiencing slight blood discharge. Why is this happening, and can a saltwater flush help clear it out?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Possible reasons for prolonged bleeding:

  1. Hormonal imbalance: Irregular estrogen or progesterone levels can cause longer or erratic periods. Common in people under 30, during stress, weight change, or after stopping birth control.
  2. Ovulation bleeding or mid-cycle spotting: Some women experience light bleeding around ovulation, which may overlap with or follow a period.
  3. Anovulatory cycle (no ovulation occurred): The uterus sheds its lining slowly and irregularly. Often happens in younger women occasionally.
  4. Uterine fibroids or polyps: Can cause prolonged light or heavy bleeding. Usually painless but persistent.
  5. Infection or cervical irritation: Less likely if there is no pain, odor, or unusual discharge, but still possible. S
  6. Stress, travel, diet change, or medication use: Lifestyle shifts can delay or extend periods.

Can a saltwater flush help?

No, a saltwater flush will not stop uterine bleeding or clean out your uterus. It is typically used as a natural colon cleanse, and can actually cause dehydration, trigger cramps or diarrhea, and disrupt electrolyte balance.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
