How to track safe days in the menstrual cycle?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My girlfriend and I had sex for the first time. We were both virgins. We used a condom, but one time, I inserted without a condom for a short moment. There was no ejaculation or noticeable pre-cum. We are not sure if it was a safe day in her cycle or not.
Please advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concerns.
Since you used a condom most of the time and there was no ejaculation during the brief moment of unprotected insertion, the chances of pregnancy are extremely low. However, if you are still concerned, here are a few important points to consider:
When did this happen in her cycle?
- If she tracks her periods, check whether this occurred during her fertile window (typically days 10 to 17 in a regular 28-day cycle).
- If it were outside this window, the risk of pregnancy would be even lower.
Pre-cum and pregnancy risk?
- Pre-cum (pre-ejaculate) usually does not contain sperm, especially in someone who has never ejaculated before (since sperm can only be present in pre-cum if there is leftover sperm in the urethra from a previous ejaculation).
- Since you did not ejaculate, and this was your first time, the risk of pregnancy is very low.
Should she take emergency contraception (morning-after pill)?
- If you are still feeling anxious and it has been less than 72 hours, she can take emergency contraception, although it is likely unnecessary in your case.
- If her period is expected soon, it may be better to wait and see if it arrives on time.
When to take a pregnancy test?
- If her period is more than a week late, she can take a home pregnancy test to be sure.
- However, based on what you have described, pregnancy is highly unlikely.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.

Hello doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
She had her period last month. She normally gets her period in the last week of the month.
