Can Misoprostol be used for emergency contraception?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Is it appropriate to use 200 mcg Misoprostol tablets for pregnancy prevention if taken 24 hours after intercourse? If this is not a suitable option, could you recommend an alternative medication for this purpose?

Thank you.

Answered by Dr. Sini. P

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Misoprostol tablets are not suitable for preventing pregnancy. Instead, I would suggest you consider using an emergency contraceptive like I-pill (Levonorgestrel) within 72 hours of sexual intercourse.

Consult your doctor, talk to them, and then take the medication as per their advice.

Thank you.
