Is the ear mole border irregular or uneven?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a mole in my ear, not sure if I ever noticed it before. I want to know if I need to get it checked.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Thank you for sharing the photo (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). I completely understand why noticing a spot or mole in your ear, especially when you are not sure if it was there before, can feel concerning. Areas like the ear are easy to overlook, so it is quite common to suddenly notice something that may have actually been present for a long time without causing any symptoms.

From the image, the lesion is a small, well-defined pigmented mark and looks benign. Other possibilities include trauma induced hyperpigmentation that usually goes unnoticed during itching or cleaning of the ear, or even clogged pores. To give your exact diagnosis, I would like to ask a few relevant history points.

Have you had any recent or past trauma to this area of the ear, such as scratching, piercing, pressure from earphones, masks, or habitual rubbing, as trauma can sometimes lead to post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) that appears as a dark spot.

You recall any pimple, boil, insect bite, or inflammation at this site before the pigmentation appeared, which could suggest a clogged pore or healing lesion rather than a mole. It would also be helpful to know whether you have noticed any change over time in the size, color, or shape of the spot, or if it has remained stable since you first noticed it.

Additionally, have you had similar moles elsewhere on your body, or a personal or family history of unusual moles or skin cancer? Lastly, please share if there are any symptoms such as itching, pain, bleeding, or crusting. These details will help to differentiate between trauma induced pigmentation, a benign mole, or a clogged pore and guide whether further examination is needed.

I hope this helps.

Please follow up if you have any further concerns.

Thank you.
