What is melanoma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello,

I have been feeling weak, and suffering from shortness of breath and headaches. I do have a mole on my neck that has been getting bigger. I have got a blood test done and everything came back negative. The mole did not hurt and my thyroids were swollen two days before I started to feel sick I consulted a physician and I was diagnosed with a virus. I went to another hospital after a day and gave a blood test to detect the presence of cancer cells along with a swab in my mouth, and an IV. I felt a little better after the IV but I am still feeling sick. I am afraid it is melanoma. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

  • A mole does not cause any problem as it has a tendency to become malignant in cases of Caucasian individuals (white people). Melanoma or other skin cancer occurs on the photo exposed part of the body like face or hand.
  • The depth of the pigment of the mole may vary, superficial or deep.
  • If it is superficial, it can be removed by a single sitting of radio frequency or a laser treatment.
  • Where as in case of a deeper mole, it will require more than two sittings. Since removing it in a single sitting, it can cause a scar.
  • The pigment in the deeper mole can recur even after removing it, hence the choice of removing it will be only because of cosmetic reasons.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
