What steps should be taken to treat a torn mole?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 24-year-old female. Two weeks ago, I may have accidentally torn off a mole on the back of my shoulder, mistaking it for a pimple. I cleaned the area immediately, stopped the bleeding, and bandaged it. On the next day, my mother noticed it and thought it was a pimple, attempting to pop it, but I stopped her and explained that I might have torn a mole. Two days ago, the area formed a scab that fell off, but now there is a small pinkish lump where the scab was, which has grown significantly in just two days. It is not itchy or painful, but I am unsure if this is part of the normal healing process or something more serious. I plan to schedule a dermatologist appointment by the end of the week if there is no improvement.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I am very sorry to hear about your medical condition, but I am glad you are paying close attention to changes in your body. Please do not worry; I am here to help.

Based on your symptoms, it appears you may have developed a benign naevus, a type of mole that could potentially be pre-malignant. I recommend a skin biopsy or scraping to assess the lesion's morphology for further evaluation.

In the meantime, you can apply 0.1 percent Dexamethasone cream twice daily for two weeks to help manage any inflammation or discomfort. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with their consent. If the lesion causes significant concern or discomfort, I strongly suggest visiting a dermatologist.

Feel free to reach out with additional questions or schedule a follow-up consultation.

I hope this addresses your concerns.

Thank you.
