What are methods for treating tuberculosis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been diagnosed with tuberculosis and pneumonia, and the thought is crushing me. I have lost 30 pounds in two months and cannot stop coughing blood. I am 39 years old and work on a construction site; I believe I have also exposed others, and I am highly guilty. Isolation is also hurting me mentally.

These tuberculosis treatments make me so nauseous that I think my eyes are going yellow. They also mentioned the chest x-ray looked bad. Fortunately, my wife and children tested negative. My mortgage is building up, and I am not sure how long I will be unable to work. I am also having night sweats and fever spikes and would like to know the treatment timeframe.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Tuberculosis (TB) (a highly contagious bacterial infection that mostly affects the lungs) can cause serious health issues when it leads to complications like pneumonia.

It is essential to continue prescribed treatment and follow up with your doctor.

TB medications (especially the combination used for multidrug-resistant strains) can cause side effects, and yellowing of the eyes (jaundice) could indicate a liver issue.

TB treatment usually lasts a minimum of six months and sometimes longer, depending on the severity of the infection and whether drug resistance is involved.

With appropriate treatment, most cases of TB can be cured.

It is essential to follow your doctor’s advice and avoid working until you are no longer contagious.

TB is most contagious during the early phase of treatment when the bacteria is still active, but you should start feeling better and less contagious after a few weeks on the correct regimen.

The time for returning to work depends on:

  1. How has your condition improved?

  2. How contagious is your TB strain?

The side effects of TB medications include:

  1. Nausea.

  2. Loss of appetite.

  3. Fatigue.

  4. Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or skin) needs immediate attention, as it can indicate liver stress.

Speak to a counselor to help you emotionally. There may be financial assistance available, through local government programs, that can help with medical bills and living expenses.

Speak with your mortgage lender about temporary relief options, such as forbearance or reduced payments, while you are recovering. I hope you find some relief soon, and remember that TB is treatable.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
