Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
With the recent heat wave, I am concerned about my heart health, especially since I have a history of coronary artery disease. Can extreme heat increase the risk of myocardial infarction? What precautions should I take to protect my heart during such hot weather?
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
While a patient with a weak heart and ventricular dysfunction (ventricular dysfunction (LVD) weakens your heart's pumping power) can be pushed into decompensated heart failure owing to heat exhaustion and heat stroke (the most serious heat-related illness) due to changes in fluid balance, it is very rare to attribute a heart attack or myocardial infarction (decreased or complete cessation of blood flow to a portion of the myocardium) to the heat wave. Theoretically, thrombosis (clumping of platelets) is possible due to possible dehydration, but its clinical significance is unknown. The best way to stay healthy during the heatwave is to take general measures like being well-hydrated and avoiding strenuous exercise in the afternoons and late mornings.
I hope this helps.
Thank you, and take care.
Regards.
