What kind of daily assistance is most helpful in NMOSD?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My mother is 72 years old, and she has NMOSD. When she is not in the hospital, she really tries to be independent at home; however, there are days when this task becomes very difficult. We are looking for something that would help her, something easy, not medication.

What kind of daily assistance was the most helpful to someone with NMOSD?

Please guide.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I know how hard it is for your mom, and I am happy that you are trying to find ways to support your family member in maintaining his independence. It may not be easy for your relative to live with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder at his age, but there are many options apart from medicine that can help.

For instance, making sure that the patient’s house is a safe environment, with proper lighting, without obstacles, with grab bars in the bathroom, and assistive equipment, if necessary, will avoid falls. Regular exercise and stretching can help maintain the strength and mobility of your family member within her abilities. Occupational therapy will help you learn how to do everyday tasks in the most comfortable way.

You may try to organize activities according to her energy level, take breaks to avoid exhaustion, eat healthy food, and drink enough water. Participation in pleasant activities will have a positive effect on her emotional state because a patient with a chronic neurological disease can feel isolated. Emotional support from family members, maintenance of social contacts, and engagement in pleasant activities are very important for your family member, too.

Regular visits to the neurologist are needed to identify any changes and symptoms or signs of a relapse can be recognized and treated promptly. With a combination of supportive care, rehabilitation, and a strong family network, many people with NMOSD are able to preserve their independence and quality of life for as long as possible.

Hope the above information helps you.

Best Regards.
