Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My baby has been having a nocturnal cough lately, especially at night, but there do not seem to be any other symptoms like fever or difficulty breathing. I am a bit concerned that it might be something serious like pneumonia. Can you help me understand what might be causing this nighttime cough in my baby? Are there other possible reasons besides pneumonia that could be causing it? What should I do if the cough persists or if other symptoms develop? I want to make sure my baby gets the right care and treatment.
Please help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Common non-serious causes that may cause nocturnal coughing are:
1. Allergens such as dust, pet dander, or pollen can trigger coughing during the night. Similarly, environmental irritants like tobacco smoke or strong perfumes might also be responsible.
2. Dry air can irritate the throat and airways, leading to coughing. This can be particularly noticeable during the night if the air in your home becomes cooler and drier when the heating system is off.
3. When excess mucus from the nose drains down the back of the throat, it may cause nighttime coughing. This can be due to a cold, allergies, or sinus infections, leading to coughing, especially when lying down.
4. Asthma can sometimes manifest primarily as a cough, particularly at night.
5. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can also cause coughing, especially when your baby is lying down.
Here is what you can do:
1. Monitor the cough: Keep track of when the cough occurs and any other symptoms that accompany it.
2. Humidify the air: Using a humidifier in your baby's room can add moisture to the air and help alleviate coughing if dry air is the culprit.
3. Review the environment: Look for potential allergens or irritants in the areas where your baby sleeps and plays. Keeping these areas clean and free of dust or pet dander can help.
If there is worsening, breathlessness, or continued coughing in spite of medications, take the child to the nearest hospital.
I hope this helps you.
Revert in case of queries.
Regards.
