How to disinfect the home after norovirus?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My whole family just went through that awful norovirus. Everyone is feeling better now, but I am still paranoid about lingering germs in the house. How can I properly disinfect everything after a norovirus outbreak?

Does regular cleaning spray work, or do I need something stronger? My neighbor mentioned that bleach is the only thing that kills it. Is that true? Also, how long can norovirus particles survive on surfaces? I am especially concerned about the bathroom and kitchen. What cleaning products are most effective against norovirus? Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes gastroenteritis (an inflammation of the stomach and intestines, often causing diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting). There is no specific antiviral treatment for norovirus. Management focuses on supportive care to relieve symptoms and prevent dehydration. I would suggest you take the following steps:

  1. Drink plenty of fluids to replace those lost through vomiting and diarrhea. Oral rehydration solutions are particularly helpful, especially for children and the elderly.

  2. Rest to allow your body to recover.

  3. Eat bland, easy-to-digest foods such as crackers, toast, bananas, and rice as you can tolerate them. Avoid fatty, spicy, or dairy-rich foods initially.

  4. Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the toilet, changing diapers, before eating or preparing food, and after being around someone who is sick.

  5. Clean and disinfect surfaces that may be contaminated, especially after an episode of vomiting or diarrhea. Use a bleach solution (5 to 25 tablespoons of household bleach [5 % to 8 %] per gallon of water) or an EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)-registered disinfectant effective against norovirus.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
