What precautions should be taken with norovirus infection?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had norovirus a few days ago and accidentally handled some food in the fridge while I was still sick. Now I am worried I might have contaminated it. Should I throw out anything I touched, or is there a way to make sure it is safe to eat? I do not want my family to get sick. Also, how long should I be extra careful about food preparation? I read that norovirus can spread even after symptoms are gone. I really do not want to go through this again.
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Did you contaminate the food?
Maybe, but it depends. If you touched ready-to-eat food (like deli meats, fruit, and leftovers) while you were still having symptoms, yes, there is a risk that it could be contaminated. If the food was sealed or not directly touched, it is probably fine. High-risk foods that do not get cooked before eating should be thrown out if you are unsure. Anything cooked thoroughly later (like raw meat or frozen meals) will likely be safe if heated properly; norovirus is killed at about 140° Fahrenheit.
How long are you contagious?
You can shed the virus in your stool for up to two weeks after symptoms stop, but the highest risk is in the first two to three days after recovery. During that time, it is smart to be extra careful with hygiene, especially when handling food.
What to do now?
Toss anything you touched with unwashed hands while sick especially if it is uncooked or cannot be reheated. Wipe down fridge handles, door seals, counters, and anything else you touched with bleach-based cleaner or a disinfectant labeled to kill norovirus (regular wipes do not always cut it). Wash your hands with warm water, soap for 20 seconds, especially after the bathroom and before touching food. Use gloves for food preparation for a few more days if possible (or just be meticulous with handwashing).
Here is a quick pro tip: Norovirus is super resilient. It can survive on surfaces for days, and hand sanitizer does not always kill it. So, it is essential to wash with soap and water.
I hope this has helped you.
