Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am newly married, and to prevent unwanted pregnancy, my wife and I saw a doctor who prescribed tablet Dronis 20, which my wife, 26 years old, has taken daily without fail for the past six months. My wife hardly gets her period anymore. I am worried about the long-term side effects. We do not want a child for at least two years. Should she continue with this medicine? Will she have trouble conceiving once the medicine is stopped? I have heard awful things from ignorant people about oral contraceptives. I want to know, is it safe? Or is there a safer alternative?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Your wife does not have a period due to the side effect of the pill. Combined oral contraceptive pills are safe to use to prevent pregnancy for one or two years. But suppose you also want to prevent pregnancy for the next two years. In that case, you can go for other methods of contraception like an IUD (intrauterine device) or Depo-Provera (Medroxyprogesterone) because long-term use of contraceptive pills is not recommended and may cause some side effects (usually considered safe for short-term use). Sometimes it may cause difficulties in conceiving (though very rare). You can go for IUD for two to three years. After that, the side effects are less if it suits her. As such, if you want to use tablet Dronis 20 for the next six months, there is no need to worry about it.

Hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
