Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 58, and lately, I have been experiencing a constant urge to urinate, even right after I have just gone. Sometimes I do not make it to the bathroom in time, which is really embarrassing. Because of this, I have stopped going out as much.
Could this be an overactive bladder? What causes it, and is it treatable without surgery? I have tried cutting down on fluids, but that has not helped. Are there any safe medications that actually work?
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I am so sorry you are going through this; it is incredibly frustrating and isolating, but please know you are far from alone.
What you are describing does sound like overactive bladder (OAB), which is very common during the menopausal years. The drop in estrogen can thin the pelvic tissues and weaken bladder control, and age-related changes to nerves and muscles may cause the bladder to "spasm" unpredictably. The good news? Most cases improve without surgery!
Here are some effective options to consider:
If those strategies are not enough, treatments like Botox injections (a quick, in-office procedure) or PTNS (posterior tibial nerve stimulation) nerve stimulation can offer relief; both are still non-surgical options.
I hope this could help.
Thank you and regards.
