Can Pantoprazole cause increased heart rate and palpitations?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was recently diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and prescribed Omeprazole 20 mg. After running out of the medication, I started using Pantoprazole 40 mg. Shortly after starting Pantoprazole, I noticed that my heart rate speeds up and flutters. Two days ago, I stopped using Pantoprazole, but every time I get up to do something or eat or drink, my heart rate speeds up and flutters.

About a month and a half ago, I had bronchitis and asthma. The bronchitis resolved, but I still occasionally cough with some residual mucus in my chest, though most of it is gone. I am also a warfarin patient and take 10 mg daily. I have an upcoming esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) scheduled. I was able to get Omeprazole and am waiting for it to be delivered.

Could this heart rate issue be related to Pantoprazole, or should I be concerned about something else?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

One of the main side effects of Albuterol and Asmanex (Mometasone) is increased heart rate and palpitations. Although Pantoprazole can also cause palpitations, it is more commonly associated with asthma medications, particularly inhalers. I recommend discussing with your respiratory medicine doctor about adjusting your medications, either by changing them or lowering the doses to optimal levels.

Additionally, since you are experiencing palpitations, it is important to consider whether there could be an underlying cardiac issue. I suggest getting a few basic cardiology tests, such as a 24-hour Holter monitor and a 2 dimension echocardiogram, to rule out any heart-related pathology. Once any potential cardiac issues are ruled out, adjusting the doses of your inhalers and bronchodilators should help improve your symptoms.

I hope I have answered your query.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
