Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My father is planning to undergo surgery for parotid gland swelling that occurred. We have undergone an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan for this purpose. I am attaching the reports of the MRI scan. Could you please provide us with a brief explanation regarding the following details? Does the MRI scan show normal results, or are there any abnormalities identified? There is a mention of 'cervical branch in relation to the mass lesion is not visualized: suggestive of encasement.' Could you please explain the meaning and implications of this statement?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq, and thank you for choosing us as your provider for health care.

I have reviewed the attached reports (attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity). The MRI reveals a benign tumor of the parotid gland on the left side. According to the MRI findings, the cervical branch in relation to the mass lesion is not visualized, which is suggestive of encasement. The cervical nerve is a branch of the facial nerve that passes through the parotid gland. The MRI indicates that the mass lesion, specifically Wharthin's tumor, has involved this branch.

I hope your query got resolved. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.

Treatment plan

The treatment plan involves surgery.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks you for the reply.

Does this mean that the removal of this tumor through surgery would also impact the branch of the facial nerve? Or is it possible to preserve this branch?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

With meticulous dissection during surgery, it is possible to preserve the branch.

Hope I have clarified your query.

Thank you.
