What are the considerations for pediatric emergencies?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 30-year-old mother. I am putting together a comprehensive first aid kit for my home, and I would like your advice on essential items to include. What are the most critical supplies and medications that should be in every household's first aid kit? Also, could you guide how to properly assess and respond to common medical emergencies, such as severe bleeding, burns, or suspected fractures? I am particularly concerned about accidents involving children. Are there any specific first-aid techniques or considerations for pediatric emergencies? Additionally, how can I determine when a situation requires immediate professional medical attention versus when home care is sufficient?

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Basic supplies include:

  1. Adhesive bandages (various sizes).
  2. Sterile gauze pads (different sizes).
  3. Adhesive tape.
  4. Roller bandages.
  5. Triangular bandages (for slings).
  6. Antiseptic wipes and antiseptic solution.
  7. Tweezers.
  8. Scissors.
  9. Safety pins.
  10. Disposable gloves (non-latex if possible).
  11. Digital thermometer.
  12. Instant cold packs.
  13. Cotton balls and swabs.
  14. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Medications (unless otherwise contra-indicated):

  1. Pain relievers (Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen).
  2. Antihistamines (for allergic reactions).
  3. Hydrocortisone cream (for insect bites and rashes).
  4. Antibiotic ointment (antibiotic paste containing Bacitracin, Neomycin, and Polymyxin B).
  5. Antacids.
  6. Oral rehydration salts.
  7. Personal prescription medications (with instructions).
  8. Cough and cold medications.

Special items for children:

  1. Pediatric versions of pain relievers and antihistamines.
  2. Medicine spoons for accurate dosing.
  3. Pediatric adhesive bandages.
  4. Infant and child thermometers.

Follow these in case of emergencies:

1. For severe bleeding: Apply direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or bandage. Maintain pressure until the bleeding stops. If bleeding continues, add more layers without removing the original cloth. Elevate the injured area above heart level if possible. Advised immediate hospital admission or emergency visit.

2. For burns, immediate hospital admission is advised.

3. For pediatric emergency considerations, immediate hospital admission is advised.

4. For choking:

  • For infants, use five back blows followed by five chest thrusts.

  • For older children, perform the Heimlich maneuver.

  • CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation): Learn pediatric CPR, which includes different techniques for infants and children.

5. For poisoning: Keep the poison control center number handy and follow their instructions immediately.

Immediate hospital admission is needed for the following:

  • Difficulty breathing, chest pain, or severe allergic reactions.

  • Uncontrolled bleeding.

  • Severe burns.

  • Suspected fractures, especially with visible deformity.

  • Signs of a concussion (confusion, vomiting, loss of consciousness).

  • High fever in infants or young children.

Always remember that a physical examination by a doctor in a hospital is a must for a comprehensive assessment.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to follow up with any questions.

Regards.
