How long should it take for a minor perineal tear to heal?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I had a vaginal tear after sex, located outside the vaginal opening in the perineal area. It has been two weeks, but the cut has not healed. However, I have no pain or discomfort.
Please help me.
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Based on your description, a vaginal or perineal tear from sex two weeks ago, with no pain or discomfort but still not healed. Here is what might be happening and what you can do:
Likely cause:
A minor perineal skin tear (commonly due to friction, dryness, or rough penetration).
Since there is no pain or signs of infection, it is likely superficial. However, delayed healing could be due to:
-
Moisture or friction from underwear or wiping.
-
Lack of airflow to the area.
-
Mild fungal or bacterial overgrowth.
What you can do now:
1. Keep the area dry and clean:
-
Wash gently with lukewarm water only; avoid using soap directly on the wound.
-
Pat dry,do not rub.
-
After urination or bathing, allow the area to air-dry for 10 to 15 minutes if possible.
Use a healing ointment (over-the-counter options):
-
Himalaya antiseptic cream, Betadine ointment, or Zinc oxide cream.
-
Apply a thin layer twice daily after washing and drying the area.
Avoid the following until fully healed:
-
Sexual intercourse.
-
Tight or synthetic underwear, wear clean, breathable cotton instead.
When to see a doctor:
Even if painless, seek medical advice if any of the following occur:
-
The cut still looks open, red, or raw after two to three more days.
-
There is foul odor, discharge, or swelling.
-
The wound has not healed by the end of the third week.
This sounds like a minor issue that should heal with simple local care.
Would you like a home care checklist to help manage the healing process?
Feel free to ask if you need any more clarification or help with your questions.
Thank you.
