What are the factors for developing pneumococcal meningitis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 32-year-old sister was admitted to the hospital with meningitis caused by pneumococcal bacteria. She is confused, extremely sensitive to light and sound, and experiences frequent vomiting. Her neck is extremely stiff, and she is unable to look down. The hospital has started emergency antibiotics but mentioned that the next 48 hours are critical.

What are the chances of her having meningitis due to pneumococcal bacteria? Could there be any permanent damage? Is it fatal, and what are her chances of survival?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

With the symptoms stated, she already has meningitis. Starting antibiotics is a good step, as it is the appropriate treatment. She may need to continue the antibiotics for at least two weeks. With a good response to the treatment, she should recover well without complications. Stay positive.

With proper antibiotic coverage, her neck stiffness, vomiting, and photophobia should resolve.

What antibiotics is she currently on?

Was a lumbar puncture performed?

Not everyone develops complications from meningitis, but early treatment is crucial, and that has already been initiated for her.

Prevention

  1. Avoid contact with sick individuals.

  2. Maintain good hygiene through regular handwashing and proper cough etiquette.

  3. Ensure vaccination.

  4. Family members can take rifampicin to prevent infection.

Please let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.
