How serious is pneumococcal disease in children?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son has been having a fever, cough, and difficulty breathing for a few days, and the doctor suspects it could be pneumococcal disease. I am really scared because I have heard it can be serious in kids. What are the next steps for confirming the diagnosis? Should he be admitted to the hospital, or can we manage this at home? Also, what treatments are recommended for children, antibiotics or something else? I want to make sure we act quickly and give him the best care to avoid any complications. How serious is this, and what should I watch for?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I understand how scary this situation must be, especially with a young child potentially facing a serious infection like pneumococcal disease. To confirm the diagnosis, the doctor may recommend a chest X-ray and blood tests, along with a sputum sample. Hospitalization may be necessary if symptoms are severe, such as labored breathing or dehydration.

Pneumococcal infections are typically treated with antibiotics, depending on severity and resistance. Supportive care with rest, fluids, and fever-reducing medications is also essential. Watch for worsening symptoms, such as difficulty breathing or persistent high fever, as pneumococcal disease can be serious. Prompt treatment can lead to recovery without long-term complications, so ensure close contact with your doctor for necessary care.

I hope you got an answer.

Please let me know if you need any further help.

Thank you.
