Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am worried about pneumococcal disease and want to know more about the symptoms and who is most at risk. What are the early signs of pneumococcal infections, like pneumonia or meningitis, and how quickly do they progress? Are certain people, such as young children, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems, more susceptible to severe infections? How is pneumococcal disease different from other respiratory infections, and how can it be identified early to prevent serious complications?
Please help.

Pneumococcal vaccine is advised for children and all individuals who are above 65 years of age irrespective of their health status. It is quite effective in preventing occurrence of pneumonia due to streptococcus pneumoniae.
It is recommended in children and elderly and must be taken by all such individuals. This vaccine is quite safe and only mild side effects like fever, local site pain can occur.
Measures for prevention of pneumonia in general includes:
Regular vaccination should be given two to four weeks after recovery from pneumonia including COVID-19, pneumococcal and influenza vaccinations, if not taken already.
Maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.
Ensure consumption of a balanced and nutritious diet.
I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.
Thank you.
