Does diabetes increase the risk of pneumonia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

As a 28-year-old man with type 1 diabetes, I have recently learned about pneumococcal disease and its complications. I work in a crowded office environment and frequently travel for business. I have never received a pneumococcal vaccine before, and I am unsure if I need one at my age. However, given my diabetes and frequent exposure to different environments, should I consider vaccination? What specific risks should I be aware of, given my medical condition?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Vaccination is a key preventive measure for reducing the risk of pneumococcal disease, especially for individuals with diabetes. Poor glycemic control can make infections more severe and harder to manage. Pneumonia from pneumococcal bacteria can disrupt blood sugar levels, leading to diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a medical emergency. For adults with diabetes, two vaccines are recommended: PCV15 or PCV20 (conjugate vaccines) and PPSV23 (polysaccharide vaccine).

Common side effects of these vaccines include mild redness, swelling, pain at the injection site, low-grade fever, or muscle aches. Pneumococcal disease can lead to pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia, and people with diabetes are more vulnerable due to weakened immunity. Crowded environments and frequent travel further elevate your risk. Be sure to consult with your doctor to ensure your diabetes is well-controlled and discuss any additional vaccines, like for influenza or hepatitis A/B.

I hope you got an answer.

Please let me know if you need any further help.

Thank you.
