Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 8-year-old son recently recovered from pneumonia after a concerning week in the hospital. While I am relieved that he is better, I am uncertain about his post-recovery care. Should we continue any medications now that he is home? I am also wondering about his diet can he have cold drinks or ice cream yet?
He is eager to play outside again, but I am concerned about how fresh air might affect his lungs. Are there any activities we should avoid? How can I support his full recovery without being overprotective? I want to ensure he regains his strength safely. Any advice on post-pneumonia care? Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Thanks for your query.
To assist you better with your child's condition, please attach the hospital discharge slip so I can review the details of the diagnosis, the severity of the condition, and the treatment provided. If the diagnosis was pneumonia, as you mentioned, there is a risk of recurrence, which is higher in children and the elderly.
To prevent recurrence and complications of pneumonia, please follow these measures:
Regular consultations with a pediatrician and pulmonologist.
Consistent use of any prescribed medications that were provided at discharge.
If the diagnosis was reactive airway disease or asthma, additional measures should be followed:
Regular use of inhalers or nebulizers prescribed at discharge.
Consistent follow-ups with the pediatrician and pulmonologist.
Regarding diet: If the patient experiences increased symptoms after specific meals, avoid those meals. Otherwise, there are no specific dietary restrictions, but it is advisable to avoid extremely cold or hot foods.
Generally, fresh air does not worsen asthma, but exercise may trigger bronchial asthma (a chronic inflammatory condition of the airways that causes episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing) in some individuals. Proper baseline asthma control can help prevent this.
Please follow the above instructions, and if possible, share the discharge slip of your child for further assistance.
I hope that you get your answer.
Please, let me know if you want some help.
Thank you.
