How can pneumonia and endocarditis be treated effectively?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My sister, who is 47 years old, has been dealing with endocarditis for a few years and was recently diagnosed with pneumonia. She often complains of chest pain and feeling extremely tired. The doctor who diagnosed her mentioned that this could further affect her heart but did not explain much. I am worried because her appetite is poor, and she has also lost weight. Is this disease going to worsen her heart condition? Additionally, is there anything we can do to help her recover faster? She is on regular medication for her heart, but could there be any conflicts with the medications prescribed for the pneumonia infection?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Endocarditis, an infection of the heart lining and valves, is a serious condition requiring long-term antibiotics. Chronic endocarditis can damage heart valves, causing dysfunction, heart failure, or embolic events, which explain your sister’s fatigue and chest pain. Pneumonia, a lung infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, can strain the heart by reducing oxygen levels and increasing inflammation, worsening her condition and contributing to weight loss and fatigue.

To support recovery, ensure she completes her antibiotics and consult her doctor to review her medications for interactions. Provide small, nutrient-dense meals, keep her hydrated, and encourage rest with light activities, avoiding overexertion. Watch for severe shortness of breath, irregular heart rate, chest pain, or fever, and seek immediate care if these occur. Regular follow-ups are essential to monitor her condition.

I hope this addresses your concerns.

Thank you.
