What are ways to manage pneumonia in children?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My kid is seven years old. He was suffering from a cough with phlegm, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing a week ago. I took him to the doctor, and he diagnosed his condition with pneumonia. I was very shocked. Antibiotic medications have been prescribed by the doctor. I want to know how kids develop this condition. How would it be managed efficiently for kids? Can pneumonia be prevented in kids? What lifestyle changes can be made to prevent the development of this condition in both kids and elderly people in the future? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

For pneumonia, the initial treatment is empirical antibiotics (antibiotics administered to patients before the exact bacteria causing an infection is identified), and the other supportive care depends on the patient's hemodynamic status.

Simultaneously, appropriate culture examinations should be sent, including sputum, blood, and urine cultures, to guide the specific therapy. The occurrence of pneumonia is very common in children and the elderly. It can occur easily in them since they are more immunocompromised than adults.

For prevention of pneumonia:

  1. Regular vaccination should be given two to four weeks after recovery from pneumonia.

  2. Regular follow-up with the pulmonologist (lung specialist) and pediatrician (child specialist).

  3. Maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.

  4. Ensure the consumption of a balanced and nutritious diet.

I hope this helps.

Thank you, and take care.

Regards.
