What complications can arise from pneumonia in the elderly?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 62-year-old male, who has felt quite unwell for the past week. I have a worsening persistent cough and a fluctuating fever. I also experience shortness of breath, especially when climbing stairs. Could these symptoms indicate pneumonia? I am particularly concerned because I suffered from bronchitis last winter. Should I seek immediate medical attention, or is it acceptable to wait and see if the symptoms improve? Are there any over-the-counter medications that you would recommend to help manage my symptoms in the meantime? I live with my elderly mother. Is there a risk that I could transmit this illness to her? If it is pneumonia, what kind of treatment would I likely need, and how long does recovery usually take?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Your symptoms are concerning and could indicate pneumonia( lung infection marked by cough, fever, and difficulty breathing, treated with antibiotics or antivirals), especially considering your age and recent history of bronchitis.

Pneumonia is a serious lung infection that requires prompt medical attention, particularly in older adults. The fact that your shortness of breath worsens with activities such as climbing stairs suggests that the infection may be significantly impacting your lung function.

You should seek immediate medical attention for a proper diagnosis, which will likely involve a physical examination, a chest X-ray, and possibly blood tests such as a complete blood count (CBC), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-reactive protein (CRP).

Pneumonia is typically treated with antibiotics if bacterial in nature. Depending on the severity, you might require hospitalization for oxygen therapy or intravenous antibiotics.

Over-the-counter medications like Acetaminophen can help manage fever and discomfort, but they do not treat the underlying infection.

Considering your elderly mother, pneumonia can be contagious, particularly if caused by certain bacteria or viruses. It is essential to minimize her exposure by practicing good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing, wearing a mask, and avoiding close contact until you have been assessed and have begun treatment.

Recovery from pneumonia varies depending on its severity and your overall health. It can take several weeks, particularly for older adults, but with appropriate treatment, most individuals recover fully. Early intervention is key to preventing serious complications.

Thank you.
