What are the symptoms of pneumothorax?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 28-year-old and have been using e-cigarettes for about a year now. Recently, I have been experiencing some worrying symptoms such as sharp chest pain and shortness of breath. I have heard something about a condition called pneumothorax related to vaping. Should I be concerned? What exactly is pneumothorax, and what are the symptoms I should be watching out for? Is it safe for me to continue vaping, or should I stop immediately? If I do need to quit, do you have any tips or resources to help me? Also, are there any long-term effects of vaping on lung health that I should be aware of? Lastly, if these symptoms persist, what kind of tests or examinations would you recommend to check my lung health?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Pneumothorax is the leakage of air into the chest, usually out of the lungs, that happens in accidents, injuries, and rarely due to infections.

Vaping is definitely not good since it contains nicotine. Nicotine damages all the organs, hence not advisable for chronic usage. It causes tremors, sweating, sleeplessness, impotence, infertility, heart attack, stroke, and more. It damages the lung tissues, hence the secretions (cough) cannot come out easily. The patient will have a chronic cough. Sometimes due to the irritation, it may be a dry cough. They get more frequent respiratory infections, including TB. This is because the immunity in the lungs is affected. Another risk is lung cancer.

So, the warning symptoms for lung damage are dry cough, sputum, continuous cough, body heat, tremor, blood in sputum, discolored sputum, frequent fever, and body weight loss. If you find any of the above symptoms, consult a physician for a blood test and X-ray chest to find your health status.

There are de-addiction programs and medications, chewing gums, or skin patches to come out of this habit. Please consult a psychiatrist (who deals with alcohol and smoke de addiction patients) for proper guidance.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
