Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have had an odor in my nasal pharynx for four months now. Mucus is always running down my throat, and I can not seem to swallow it all down. I can feel mucus on the upper side of my throat.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
It sounds like you are experiencing chronic postnasal drip, where mucus continuously drips down the back of your throat from your nasal passages, along with a foul nasopharyngeal odor.
This combination is often caused by -
Chronic sinusitis.
Allergic rhinitis.
Nasopharyngeal infection.
And the fact that it has been ongoing for four months suggests a persistent underlying issue. The sensation of mucus stuck in your upper throat and difficulty swallowing could be due to thickened secretions or mild inflammation in your nasopharynx or adenoidal region.
Even without other cold symptoms, silent sinus infections or nonallergic rhinitis can cause these signs. Foul odor may result from bacterial buildup in the stagnant mucus or anaerobic bacteria in postnasal secretions.
You should ideally undergo a nasal endoscopy by an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist to visualize the back of the nose and nasopharynx and rule out infections, polyps, or structural issues.
In the meantime, you can do the following to relieve your symptoms-
Use a saline nasal rinse twice daily.
Stay well hydrated.
Try a short course of intranasal steroid spray (like Mometasone or Fluticasone) and antihistamines (if allergies are suspected).
If the issue persists or worsens, a sinus CT (computed tomography) scan is recommended.
I hope this helps.
Thank you and take care.
Regards.
