Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My mother is a 53-year-old woman who has been experiencing sun allergy for the past six years. The sun allergy makes her skin extremely dry, causing cracks. Her skin also becomes very red, itchy, and sometimes swollen.
Please help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
I am really sorry that your mother has been struggling with this for so many years. What you are describing is chronic photosensitive dermatitis.
Her skin becomes abnormally sensitive to UV (ultraviolet) rays, causing inflammation, breakdown of the skin barrier, extreme dryness and cracks, and swelling and redness.
For treatment,
Use anti-inflammatory creams for seven to 10 days. Hydrocortisone one percent can be applied to mild areas like the face and neck, and Betamethasone, Mometasone, or Fluticasone cream can be used on the body once daily. These help reduce redness, swelling, and itching.
Heavy moisturization is also very important. Apply thick moisturizers three to four times daily such as Vaseline petroleum jelly, Curel Itch Defense (ceramides, glycerin, and Panthen) or ceramide-based moisturizers. These help heal the cracks and strengthen the skin.
Strict sun protection is necessary for improvement. She should avoid UV exposure, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 50+ (sun protection factor), reapply it every two to three hours, use an umbrella or hat, and cover her arms with cotton clothing. Sunscreen should be started after five days of using Hydrocortisone cream because it may cause irritation initially.
She can take Cetirizine 10 mg at bedtime for at least 7 to 10 days to reduce histamine activity.
Sun allergy is not dangerous, but it can be very painful and irritating. With proper sun avoidance, moisturization, and the right creams, your mother can experience significant relief within one to two weeks.
I hope this has helped you.
Please feel free to reach out to me again for further queries.
Thank you.
