What can cause excess bleeding even from small cuts?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My cousin who is about to complete her college studies suddenly noticed that she is bleeding a lot even after a small injury or cut. She never bothered about that earlier but nowadays, she is worried about it because she often gets cut while cooking or preparing sandwiches.

So what could be the reason and how to manage this issue? She is now 20 years old and she has not been suffering from any disease in the past and is not on any medication.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Sometimes, it is an incidental finding, or the cut is deep. But if this is repeatedly noticed, then she should get tested. Get a CBC (Complete blood count) done and a coagulation profile, including PT (prothrombin time) or APTT (Activated partial thromboplastin time) and fibrinogen levels. After that, the reason will be decided.

Meanwhile, start taking vitamin C and folic acid as these boost red cell production and help improve immunity. I hope she does not have any serious condition. Sometimes infections lead to low platelets. Sometimes there is mild hemophilia or any other bleeding disorder. These have to be ruled out. So it is better to get tested. I will wait for the reports.

Please follow up with the lab investigation. Apply a pressure bandage in case of cuts. Take a healthy diet.

I hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any other concerns.

Thank you.
