What causes bleeding after sexual activity?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
For the past three months, anytime I have been intimate with my partner, I have realized that I have been bleeding during the sex. Why is that?
Please suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Thanks for sharing something so personal; that is not something to ignore, and I am glad you are speaking up about it. Bleeding during or after sex (called post-coital bleeding) is not normal and should be checked out. Some common causes include:
Cervical issues such as:
-
Cervical erosion (ectropion) is harmless but can cause bleeding with friction.
-
Cervicitis: An inflammation or infection of the cervix. It is sometimes caused by STIs (sexually transmitted infections).
-
Cervical polyps are small growths that bleed easily.
-
Abnormal cells (precancerous or cancerous) are rare but need to be ruled out.
Vaginal causes: Vaginal dryness or tears, especially if there is not enough lubrication or if anxiety makes the muscles tense. Yeast or bacterial infections can cause inflammation and fragile tissue. Rough or deep penetration can injure delicate tissue if things are not fully comfortable or relaxed.
Hormonal issues: Low estrogen (sometimes from birth control, stress, or hormone imbalance) can thin the vaginal lining and make it bleed easily.
I suggest you do the following:
-
Please do not wait on this. A gynecologist or adolescent health specialist can do a pelvic exam and possibly a PAP (Papanicolaou test) smear (even if you are young; doctors can do it gently or delay if needed).
-
Test for infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea, or others.
-
Check for cervical or vaginal causes like polyps or inflammation.
-
If you have pain with sex, abnormal discharge, or irregular periods, bring those up too—they help point to the root cause.
I hope this will help you.
Thank you.
