How long does post-viral symptoms lasts?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 67-year-old male, retired, and enjoy traveling and volunteering at community events. I recently had a respiratory infection that my doctor believes was HMPV (human metapneumovirus). While my fever and congestion have improved, I still feel exhausted and have a lingering cough. I stay active with travel and community work, but lately, I get tired much faster than usual. Is this normal post-viral fatigue, or could something else be going on? Also, since I spend a lot of time around people, what steps can I take to reduce my risk of getting another respiratory virus, especially during the winter months?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Fatigue, exhaustion, and post-viral cough are all post-viral infective symptoms. Nothing to worry about.

Eat normally and drink plenty (preferably boiled and filtered water). Do breathing exercises, and take cough syrup if you have severe symptoms. You will get relief from symptoms in two days.

Treatment plan:

  1. Boiled filtered water.

  2. Hand wash before and after eating.

  3. Hand wash after using the toilet.

  4. Syrup Dextromethorphan plus Chlorpheniramine 5 ml thrice daily. (may feel sleepy).

Regarding follow-up:

Check your saturation often and look for danger signs like rapid breathing, not improving cough, chest retraction, fever, etc. If this occurs, immediate visit to a nearby hospital.

Preventive measures:

  1. Take adequate rest.

  2. Do breathing exercises and meditation.

  3. Use a face mask (as you travel a lot, it will be helpful).

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
