What are the causes of postcoital bleeding?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had some bleeding last night after having sex with my husband. It was light but more than my period blood. I am a breastfeeding mother of a one-year-old baby, and I had a C-section during delivery. Since this morning, there has been no bleeding, everything seems normal, and I have no pain. What could it be?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concerns and appreciate you reaching out.

If you experience postcoital bleeding for the first time, possible causes could include:

  1. Cervical ectropion.
  2. Cervical polyp.
  3. Chronic cervicitis (which is usually accompanied by vaginal discharge before the bleeding episode).

A single episode of postcoital bleeding is generally not a cause for concern. However, if it recurs, I strongly recommend consulting a gynecologist for further evaluation. A local per-speculum examination should be performed to rule out any underlying pathology.

I hope this addresses your concerns. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you.
